What's the difference between FundRaiser Basic and FundRaiser Select?

There's a world of difference between FundRaiser Select and FundRaiser Basic. But, first, if you are an existing FundRaiser Basic user, you will be glad to hear that all your FundRaiser Basic data, including your letters, will convert to FundRaiser Select format in one simple operation that you run yourself. There is no re-keying of data when you stay within the FundRaiser Family.

In Basic, you are limited to two codes per donor and one per gift. In Select, there is no limit to the number of codes per donor, and you have 4 per gift: Motivation (called Source in Basic), Fund, Purpose, and Solicitor.

These are user-defined text, code, date, number, or checkbox fields that you configure as you desire. For example, you can have one for social security number, another for marital status or ethnicity, and a third for a follow-up date.

Anonymous, inactive, mail exclude, send no gift thank you's, send End of Year, public name, report name, formal and informal salutations, gender, employer, dates of birth, birthdays, mobile phone, other phone, donor type, donor solicitor, mergeable text (add a personal note to your next letter), and more.

Mode (check, cash, in kind, etc), Motivation (instead of Source), Purpose, Solicitor, two thank you letters (each donation can have two different letters and you can batch-print them all at once), Gift Type (includes "Later" for phonathon pledges), check number, receipt number (including automatic numbering for our Canadian users), date of deposit, batch number, foreign currency, value and description of any benefit given to the donor (for US IRS reporting purposes). And an unlimited notes area.

This is a complete email management system for sending, receiving, and archiving all your donor emails. Whenever you print letters, you have the option to print and/or email those letters to your donors. Email is sent as one message to one person, with the subject line and message custom mail-merged for each person. Incoming email is automatically sorted; "bounceback" messages are processed (when the donors change their email addresses).

First, you have many more criteria, and much more flexibility, including the ability to have one criteria OR another and NOT a third. Second, you can save your queries (they're called Groupings in Select) for later use. Third, you can delete a Grouping from the Master file (great way to purge old inactive records) and you can assign the same code to everyone in a Grouping.

More reports, more options, and the ability to define your own report:

  • Donation Summary Report - gives a breakdown of donations by a variety of factors including codes and giving levels.
  • Donor Level Report - breaks your donors into user-definable giving levels for any time period.
  • New Names} - shows how many new names you have recorded per month over the years
  • New Donors} - a new donor is someone who has given for the first time. This report shows how many new donors you have had per month over the years.
  • Solicitor Summary - for those who assign donors to board members and other volunteers, especially during a fundraising campaign.
  • Correspondence Reports} - for any of the sections that batch-print letters, you can also print a report showing who is to receive which letters.
  • User-Definable Report - you pick and choose the fields (columns) you want on the report, and the order in which the report is to be printed.

The Tickles Tab is a multi-purpose reminder system for laying out important tasks and managing deadlines.

  • Map out grant application tasks
  • Assign tickles to individuals or to all staff members
  • Attach tickles to donor records

You can include graphic images like scanned signatures or logo's. Also, bulleted and numbered paragraphs, fully justified text, and a controllable ruler with tab stops and indents. Plus, you have many new merge functions including some with tables for neat formatting of mini-reports.

  • Duplicate Checking. Yes, FundRaiser Basic checks for duplicates as you type them in, and so does FundRaiser Select, but Select will also check for (and remove, if desired) duplicates in your list as it exists after the records have been added. This is especially useful after you import a new list.
  • Backups that can span multiple disks and are Zip-compatible (can be opened with WinZip)
  • Better code management. Change or delete a code and FundRaiser updates all accounts. Merge one code into another. Mark a code as inactive, and it will not appear on your dropdown lists.
  • Better Internationalization. Select picks up your preferred date format and your currency symbol from the Windows settings. You can also tell FundRaiser what term to use instead of "State" (we're listening to you, Canada). Telephone and postal code formats can be set to your personal preference. You can even record donations made in foreign currencies and record the converted local currency amount, and be able to merge either or both in your thank you letter or receipt. You can also modify and add to the country addressing standards that come with FundRaiser.
  • Automatic Lookup of City and State/Province from the postal code. For addresses outside the US, you will have to make the first entry for each postal code yourself (in order to build a lookup table), but the lookups will be automatic after that.
  • Popup yellow "sticky notes" that alert you to important information about your donors.
  • Tickler reminder system. These reminders can be tied to a donor and/or a staff member and FundRaiser will alert you (or that staff member) when the reminder is due. Once completed, these notices can be saved as the donor's case history. Reports help you to manage this system.
  • Password system. This not only controls who is able to enter the program, it also controls what areas each user can have access to. For example, your assistant might have almost full access to everything, while the receptionist can only do lookups and is not shown any financial data.
  • Alternate Addresses This is how you handle multiple addresses for the same person. It might be a date sensitive address, as with Snowbirds (who go south for the winter) and students, or it might be code-related, as with Home/Business or Student/Parent.
  • Bulk Mail This is mostly for the USA, but has its uses elsewhere, too. It is used primarily for updating the addresses and ZIP+4 codes, but can be used by anyone who sends their data out to be processed and updated by a service bureau. It also adds tight integration with USPS NCOA (National Change Of Address) processors so that you get the current address of donors who have moved in the past 3 years. It tightly integrates with ZP4, a low-cost CASS-Certification and address verification program from Semaphore Corporation.

From the developer: What are FundRaiser Online & FundRaiser Hosted?

Gene WeinbeckFundRaiser Online and FundRaiser Hosted work exactly like the current version of FundRaiser installed on your computer. The difference is that you can run either from anywhere:  home, office, library, hotel room…. you name it. You can let board members or other people have access to it, and you can limit what they can do and what they can see in the program, just like the regular version of FundRaiser.

FundRaiser Online is different than other online donor management software, though. Using technology such as is used in a webinar, you actually are working online with the regular FundRaiser software. This allows for more speed than when a browser interface is used, which is common with most other online software.

In addition to being able to access FundRaiser through the internet, there are other advantages to the Online and Hosted versions.

Maintenance is simpler.

  • You never have to install a program or a program update. That is done for you automatically.
  • Back-ups are also handled automatically daily, and you can also make your own back up.
  • Networks issues are eliminated. All you need is a good internet connection.


Adding the donor portal is simpler and less expensive. There is no need to worry about network firewalls and other similar issues. The donor portal connects your website to FundRaiser, and allows for donations, and other key data, that are entered online by donors to be entered automatically into FundRaiser.

If at some point, you want to move off the internet and into the desktop version, you can easily do that. All you have to do is your backup to FundRaiser on your own computer.

The way this works is that FundRaiser Online and FundRaiser Hosted are remotely hosted copies of FundRaiser. They sit on a powerful secure server at the FundRaiser offices.

To run FundRaiser Online, you must first install the web-enabling software that we have identified as the best, most cost-effective solution for our clients. We license copies for use by our FundRaiser users, and there is no additional charge. You will be provided with download and instructions for the installation of this software

When you run the web-enabling software, you will be connected directly to your FundRaiser Online or Hosted  database on our server. You will be able to run FundRaiser Online or Hosted exactly as you would if it was installed in your local network or computer.

Differences Between FundRaiser Select and Professional

Going from FundRaiser Select to Professional gives you a huge increase in capability. The jump is at least as big as going from Basic to Select. But, the transition is simple and small. First, you'll be glad to hear that all your FundRaiser Select data is already in FundRaiser Professional format. No conversion is necessary. And, since Professional uses FundRaiser Select as its core, all the screens are the same. You'll feel right at home. Only now, you'll have lots of new areas to explore.

Here is a listing of what you can expect:

All of the modules that are optional in Select are standard in Professional, including QuickBooks Integration, Pledges, Tributes, Memberships, Volunteer Management, Premiums, Product Sales, and Wintix Integration, and most importantly Campaign Management - Streamline and improve your campaign development and execution; Track participation, donations, tickets, RSVP's, attendance, sponsorships; Analyze and compare your campaigns to build on past success.  The only remaining decision with Professional is whether to go single-user, multi-user, or client-server.

Spare fields are custom user-definable fields for recording information that has no other spot in FundRaiser. In Select, you can have only three. In Professional, there is no limit.

These are donations that are best split into pieces, like a single check that covers both membership dues and a pledge payment. Or, a donation in support of 4 different activities. In effect, you record one donation for receipting purposes and multiple donations for reporting purposes.

are given to a donor when s/he is responsible for securing a donation but did not actually make the donation themselves. For example, a donor may have been responsible for generating a donation by a church or civic group. Or, you may want to give a spouse a soft credit for what the other gave. The soft donor gets credit in your newsletter and elsewhere, but their tax-related information stays clear.

Throughout the program, like more user-definable exclusion and inclusion checkboxes, a gift miscellaneous code and gift period code, the ability to print more than name and address on labels and envelopes, ability to combine Groupings or to subtract one Grouping from another, randomized exports, etc.

Online Donations

Donating online is the method of choice for many of today's donors. Nothing could be easier than simply clicking the "Donate Now" button and following the prompts. Recurring Donations

At FundRaiser, our target audience are small and medium-sized nonprofits - most of our customers work with an annual operating budget of less than $5M, so we work very hard to keep all of our software affordable. As part of our effort to provide great customer service in the form of transparency, we publish all of our pricing here. Interest-Free Payment Options

While we work hard to keep the software and the AMP affordable, we know that a major purchase of sophisticated fundraising software can sometimes be difficult to fit into a small nonprofit's budget. It's unfortunate, because that very software can often result in increased contributions, both in size and in quantity... sort of a nonprofit's Catch-22. To help with this, we offer flexible installment payments FundRaiser Hosted and FundRaiser Installed.

The no interest installment plans are available for 12 or 24 months to help spread out the cost of the license for the Installed or the Hosted software. With FundRaiser Installed, the monthly payments also include the Annual Maintenance Plan, so that you will always have access to the training, support, and program updates. With FundRaiser Hosted, the cost of the license is divided by 12 or 24 and added to the monthly hosting fee, which also includes AMP. While you are making your installments, you'll receive a set of temporary registration codes to use. At the end of your installment period, you own the software for life and receive your permanent registration codes.

Moving your Data

Wondering how to get your current data into FundRaiser? There are two options: Importing and Data Conversion.

Importing your Data

All three FundRaiser programs come with built-in import utilities that will make it easy for you to import donor information from a comma delimited or a CSV file. You can easily import donor demographic information like names, addresses, notes and codes. You can also import up to two donations per donor using the built-in import options. This is a good solution for organizations without extensive giving history for their donors, or organizations with mostly one-time donors. Many organizations who use this option choose to have volunteers manually enter any past giving history that didn't come through with the import.

Converting your Data

If your database contains a lot of donors with multiple donations, or multiple types of donations, such as pledges or memberships, then you might want to consider a custom Data Conversion. During this process, you will work closely with one of our Data Conversion experts to convert all of your existing data into FundRaiser. You will have multiple opportunities to determine where in FundRaiser your data should go in order to be most useful for you, and the final product is 100% satisfaction guaranteed. Learn More

American Bear Association

When Carolyn Malcolm became Program Coordinator for the American Bear Association, its membership numbers were not increasing. “Our membership numbers were holding fairly steady, but they weren’t increasing like they should have been. New members were replacing ones that didn’t renew. The problem was that we didn’t have a renewal system in place. People didn’t know to renew so we were loosing too many old members,” recalls Carolyn.

The American Bear Association maintains a sanctuary where visitors can observe bears in the wild. Members help support the educational mission of promoting a better understanding of bears. “We have membership levels: $30 for a basic membership, $100 for the next level, and $250 for the top level,” says Carolyn.

The organization was using FundRaiser Basic. Carolyn looked it over and decided they needed something more. “We send out a newsletter four times a year and I couldn’t find a convenient way to keep track of expiration dates in Basic. For that reason, we upgraded to FundRaiser Select,” Carolyn says.

Moving from Basic to Select

The data moved well from Basic to Select. The automatic duplicate record checking in Select helped catch extra records. “There were lots of multiple entries, so having those pointed out has helped. The data was put in interestingly because we have so many people working in the database. I’ve been manually fixing it. Other then that, the move went smoothly.”

Membership is climbing

With FundRaiser Select, the American Bear Association has been able to keep track of membership renewal dates, and send timely reminders. “Now we put expiration stickers on the newsletter when a member’s term is up. We have gotten a lot of positive feedback about that. Memberships have been increasing since we’ve started. Select is working.”

Says Gina Mankus, office manager for the American Bear Association, “For many members, it’s been three years since they signed up. The stickers are getting them back.”

Returning members make up for economic downturn

Increased membership renewals are closing the gap left by impact of the poor economy. “Expiration stickers are making up for the losses brought on by the economy,” says Carolyn. Gina agrees. “We aren’t getting many new members because of the economy, but the renewal stickers have really helped. Now we’re increasing our membership,” says Gina.
