Getting over the fear of asking for money

Posted: July 2003

Some interesting facts about asking for money:

  • few people give money unless they are asked
  • nearly everyone feels good when they give money
  • most giving is done by people on incomes of less then $60,000
  • when you ask people you know for a contribution, at least half of them will say yes

But now, when you are starting to sweat thinking about how you 'should' ask for money, but think you can't, let's admit that it is nerve wracking to ask.

One of the big reasons for this is what we are taught about money-- first, that it is bad taste to talk about money... sort of like bringing up the topic of sex!

Kim Klein, a dynamic fund raising expert, says that the fear of asking for money is like hearing a sound in the night-- the dangers are mostly in your imagination, and if you check them out, you can relax.
